What’s new in Shijro
Every release since Shijro reached Google Play, newest first, in the words the app itself uses when it updates.
3.0.0
- Shijro now speaks 18 more languages, from French and Spanish to Arabic and Hindi. It follows your phone, or choose one in Settings.
- Shijro opens on your family tree. Activity shows what everyone added, the bell holds your notifications, and Settings holds everything else.
- The tree is clearer: a colour for each person, a heart between couples, and a word for how your close family are related to you.
- Tap someone on the tree to add a parent, partner, child or sibling, new or already in the family. You come back to them on the tree.
- A new account starts with a short welcome: start your family tree in two steps, or join one a relative started.
- When you ask a relative a question, you send them a link. They open it and answer by talking. No app or account needed.
2.2.0
- Shijro now turns with your phone. On a tablet or an unfolded phone, screens sit in a comfortable column in the middle instead of stretching from edge to edge, and photo grids show more photos across.
- In the family tree, couples are joined with a double line and sit closer together than brothers and sisters, brothers and sisters go from oldest to youngest, and a husband sits to the left of his wife.
- A long row of brothers, sisters and cousins no longer runs off the screen: their husbands and wives are shown as a small name on their card, and a tap brings them into the tree.
- The tree only explains itself until you have tried it, and says how many people are hidden in a small corner label instead of a line across the bottom.
- People without a photo are shown as a simple figure of a man or a woman instead of their initials.
- Relatives are named the way people say them: a maternal aunt, a paternal grandfather, a half-sister, a stepbrother or a sister-in-law’s mother, rather than a long chain of words.
- Once you have said which person in the family you are, each person’s page says how they are related to you. Tap it to see the path, one person at a time. On the tree, How related compares someone with anyone in the family, even people not drawn yet, and the ways to add a relative are now in one Add relative button.
2.1.0
- A new family now starts with a few short steps: add yourself and your parents, give someone a face, record one memory of them and send a question to someone who remembers. Every step can be skipped. People who join get a shorter version.
- The family tree is easier to read: everyone is on their own card with their full name over two lines, and couples sit together with one line down to their children.
- Grow the tree without leaving it: tap the pencil on the tree to see empty places for missing parents, partners and children, and fill one in with just a name.
- Dates are now typed as day, month and year, with no calendar to scroll back through, and a month and year can be given without the day.
- AI use is now shown as the minutes or hours of recordings your family has left, instead of a count of tokens.
- Home no longer says someone was found in a photo when they were added to a document; tapping it opens the document list instead.
- Opening an invitation link is quicker: the family shows as soon as it loads, and a slow connection gets a second try.
2.0.0
- A recording the family has no room for is kept on your phone, under Waiting to be saved on the family's Home, until it can be saved. Nobody has to say it all again.
- Adding several children at once checks there is room for all of them first, so it never stops halfway.
- Photos load faster and use less data in lists, on Home and on the tree: Shijro now fetches a copy the size it is shown, and the full photo only when you open it.
- A family's usage says how much of its storage is still held by things in Recently deleted, which keep their room for 30 days, and a tap opens them.
- More room for a family: anyone in it can add storage from the family's Settings tab, 25 GB or 100 GB, monthly or yearly, and what different people add counts together.
- More AI for writing out and translating recordings: buy it once, from the same place, and it never runs out on a date.
- Each family has 100 MB of photos, documents and recordings and 100,000 AI tokens to start with, and room for 2,000 people. Each person can start 2 families, and keeps any they already have.
- Shijro tells you when a family is running low on room or AI, and what to do about it.
- Download everything a family has kept, from its Settings tab: the tree, a page for each person, stories, photos, recordings with their words, and documents, ready to open in any web browser with no app. Anyone in the family can ask, and the link comes by email.
- A deleted family can be brought back from the Families screen for 30 days, and everyone who was in it gets an email saying so.
- A family's Home now shows what was shared, not just a line about it: photos large, the start of a story with Read more, and recordings you can play right there.
- Zooming out of the tree always reveals more relatives, and zooming back in tidies them away. The setting for it is gone.
- With a larger text size, the choices on forms, like Exact date or Passed away, are no longer cut short: they wrap, or stack one above the other when they would not fit side by side.
- Tagging a photo or document can add someone who is not in the family yet: choose Add someone new, and saving them tags them straight away, on the face you tapped if you started from one.
- Asking a relative keeps working once your family's AI is used up. Shijro says before you send that the question goes exactly as you write it, so you can write it in their language, and their answer still comes back in their own voice.
- Like a story, from the story or under it on Home, and see who else did. Whoever shared it hears about it, a few likes at a time rather than one by one.
- On a family's Home, tap the name or picture of whoever added something to open their page. If you have not said which person in the tree you are, Home asks, so your picture shows beside what you add and you hear news about you and your close family.
1.1.0
- Stories: write down a memory, record it in your own voice, or add photos to it, and each person's page now shows their life in order, from their stories and the dates the tree already knows.
- Photos is now Media, on a family and on each person: photos, stories and documents in one place, including documents that belong to the whole family.
- Ask a relative: send a question about a photo or a memory as a link in any chat, and they answer by talking, in their own language, with no app needed. Their voice comes back with the words written out and translated.
- A family's Usage card shows media, people and this month's AI use for writing out and translating recordings.
- The tree now reveals more relatives on its own as you zoom out, and tidies back up as you zoom back in. Turn it off under Settings > Appearance if you would rather zoom stayed just zoom.
- Hide an entry from Home that you added by mistake, or that you made and would rather not announce. An admin, or whoever made it, can hide it for everyone, and bring it back the same way.
- Notifications: Shijro can tell you when a relative asks you something, answers your question, or invites you to a family, and when someone tags you, writes about you or edits your biography, or does the same for your parents, children, partner, brothers and sisters. After a few days away, an evening note says what your families added meanwhile. Turn them on from a family's Home, and choose which under Settings > Notifications.
- Shijro now opens on the Hartleys, a made-up family, for anyone who has not signed in yet, and a relative who installs Shijro from your invite link lands on the invitation without typing the code.
- A partner link marked Ended no longer disappears for good: admins and whoever added it find it under Former partners on that person's Relatives tab, to fix its dates, set it back or remove it.
- Add a photo or a story from a family's Home with the + button, and say who is in a new photo straight away: tag everyone in it and it shows on each of their pages.
- A Notifications tab keeps everything Shijro has told you for the last three months, even with notifications turned off on your phone, and its unread count shows on the tab and on the app icon.
1.0.2
- A family now opens on Home: what your relatives have added lately, and the birthdays and anniversaries coming up. Search for anyone from the top of Home; the tree has a search button too.
- The tree uses the whole screen, with badges to reveal more, and keeps children from an earlier marriage under both their parents.
- Photos: naming people is now Tag people, you can remove yourself from a photo someone else added, and profile photos in lists always show the part you chose.
- Documents have a caption, a date and a note, like photos. Press and hold one and choose Edit details.
- A partner link can be changed after it is made: mark a marriage as ended or widowed and set its dates, from the menu beside the partner on the Relatives tab.
- Invite links no longer run out, children are no longer offered an invitation, and invitations name your family the way you wrote it.
- Change your own name under Settings > Account, say which person in the tree you are from the Members screen, and, as an admin, rename a family from its Settings tab.
- Recently deleted can now delete a single item for good.
- A slow connection now offers Try again instead of spinning forever, opening a family straight after signing in no longer fails, and signing up with an email that was never confirmed works.
- Settings has a Rate Shijro row under About, and Shijro may ask once for a rating after you have added a few relatives or a photo.
1.0.1
- Documents open properly on the newest Android phones, and the app is a little smaller.
